You might hear people say,
“DSA isn’t used in real jobs.”
For many software roles, that’s partly true. Most engineers don’t solve complex DSA problems every day, and aptitude tests are rarely part of the actual work.
But here’s what many students realize too late:
Ignoring DSA and aptitude can significantly reduce your opportunities, especially in campus placements and many entry-level software roles.
The skills required to get a job are not always the same as the skills required to do the job.
You could be an excellent developer with impressive projects and strong technical knowledge. However, if a company uses DSA and aptitude as its initial screening process, you may never reach the interview where you can demonstrate those skills.
Of course, there are companies that focus more on projects, portfolios, open-source contributions, or practical skills. Many students have successfully landed jobs through those paths.
However, if your goal is to maximize your opportunities, don’t ignore DSA and aptitude.
Continue learning your chosen domain, build meaningful projects, and spend a little time each week practicing DSA and aptitude. It may not be the most exciting part of your journey, but it can open doors that might otherwise remain closed.
