Tenses and Articles Concepts

Review English tense and article rules together with common usage patterns and verbal ability examples.

1. Tense and Article Together

Concept: Some questions test both verb tense and article usage in the same sentence.

Rule: Check two things:

  • Is the tense correct according to the timeline?
  • Is the article correct according to whether the noun is specific or general?

Example: The CEO mentioned that the company will launching a new product next month.

Answer: The CEO mentioned that the company will be launching a new product next month.

Why? “Will launching” is incorrect. The correct future continuous form is will be launching. “A new product” is correct because it is a singular countable noun being mentioned for the first time.

2. Tense and Article in Context

Concept: Look at both the time of the action and whether the noun is already known or mentioned.

Rule: Use:

  • a/an → first mention or non-specific singular noun
  • the → specific or already identified noun
  • no article → many uncountable nouns used generally

Example: An old man whom we met yesterday gave us the excellent advice about investing.

Answer: An old man whom we met yesterday gave us excellent advice about investing.

Why? “Met” and “gave” are correctly in the past tense. “Advice” is uncountable and is used generally here, so the is unnecessary.
