Paragraph Ordering Concepts

Learn how to identify logical sequence, sentence relationships, and paragraph structure.

1. Logical Paragraph Sequence

Idea: Arrange the paragraphs so that the ideas flow naturally from the beginning to the end.

Rule:

  • Find the paragraph that introduces the topic.
  • Follow the natural order of cause → effect → solution or general → specific.
  • Words like however, therefore, in response, as a result give useful clues.

Example:

Problem: Arrange these paragraphs in the correct order.

  • A: However, this rapid urbanization also brought severe challenges—overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and air pollution.
  • B: The Industrial Revolution of the 19th century triggered an unprecedented migration from rural areas to cities.
  • C: In response, city planners began designing green belts and implementing zoning laws to improve living conditions.

Solution:

  • B comes first because it introduces the main topic.
  • A follows because “However” introduces the problems caused by urbanization.
  • C comes last because “In response” shows the steps taken to solve those problems.

Answer: B - A - C

2. Chronological Order

Idea: When paragraphs describe events from different periods, arrange them according to time.

Rule: Look for time clues such as early, later, by the 1970s, afterward, currently, today. Start with the earliest event and move towards the present.

Example:

Problem: Arrange these passages in the correct order.

  • 1: By the 1970s, environmental legislation had become a global priority, with the first Earth Summit held in 1972.
  • 2: The early industrial era saw factories dumping waste directly into rivers with no legal consequences.
  • 3: Currently, most nations enforce strict emission standards and invest heavily in renewable energy research.

Solution:

  • 2 comes first because it describes the early industrial era.
  • 1 comes next because it refers to the 1970s.
  • 3 comes last because it describes the present situation.

Answer: 2 - 1 - 3
