Para Jumbles Concepts

Learn techniques for arranging jumbled sentences into a logical and coherent paragraph.

1. Paragraph Reconstruction

Idea: Sentences are given in the wrong order. Arrange them to form a clear and logical paragraph.

Rule:

  • Find the sentence that introduces the topic.
  • Look for sentences that explain or develop the topic.
  • Sentences with this, that, it, they, these usually come after the noun they refer to.
  • A result or conclusion usually comes towards the end.

Example:

Problem: Arrange A, B, C, D.

  • A: This phenomenon is called the greenhouse effect.
  • B: As a result, the planet’s average temperature rises.
  • C: Certain gases trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere.
  • D: The rise leads to changes in weather patterns worldwide.

Solution:

  • C comes first because it introduces the main idea.
  • A comes next because “This phenomenon” refers to the heat-trapping mentioned in C.
  • B follows because “As a result” gives the result of the greenhouse effect.
  • D comes last because “The rise” refers to the rise in temperature mentioned in B.

Answer: C - A - B - D

2. Pronoun and Transition Clues

Idea: Pronouns and linking words help you find which sentences belong together.

Rule:

  • He, she, it, they, this, these → look for the noun mentioned earlier.
  • However, but → show contrast.
  • Therefore, thus, as a result → show result.
  • Also, moreover, furthermore → add information.

Example:

Problem: Arrange A, B, C, D.

  • A: They are now found in almost every country and are a major source of renewable energy.
  • B: Solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity.
  • C: However, their efficiency drops significantly on cloudy days.
  • D: This technology was first developed in the 1950s.

Solution:

  • B comes first because it introduces solar panels.
  • A follows B because “They” refers to solar panels.
  • D follows because “This technology” refers to the technology mentioned in B.
  • C comes last because “However” introduces a contrasting point.

Answer: B - A - D - C
